grade periods

What does "grade periods" mean? Semesters can be a common unit for your transcript or report card. Does "grade periods" mean certain exams like mid-term or final exams or whatever exams you take?

ex)My wife, Janice, and I have seen a marked decrease in our daughter, Noreen's, performance in your science class during the last two grade periods....

I think it's probably mid-term and final in one semester, but I'm not hundred percent sure.

In schools in the US prior to college, there are grading periods, usually 4 per academic year, of 9-weeks each. Some schools have 6 periods of 6 weeks each.

This sounds like parents writing to a child's teacher.

Thanks a lot! Does one grading period depend on one exam like mid-term or final exam? What is the basis for one grading term? Do schools dispatch reports cards to parents at the end of each semester?

We are talking about schoolchildren, from K-12. They are graded on frequent tests, quizzes, and homework. Midterms and finals come into play mostly in college, or in some advanced courses in high school.

Report cards give grades for each student. They are given at the end of each grading period, as described above.

Again, American K-12 schools are not organized on a semester basis.
