From Dictionary and Thesaurus - Merriam-Webster Online
9 : to pass suddenly and passively into a state of body or mind or a new state or condition <fall asleep> <fall in love>

Hi,
Thank you. Great explanation!!!
As they came to the end of their meal, they fell silent and looked at one another.
As they came to the end of their meal, they passed into a state of silent and looked at one another. Right?

Passed into a state of silence.
Silent is an adjective.
A state requires a noun: silence.

I think became silent is more frequently used than your second suggestion.
Maybe turned silent could be an option.

I wouldn't use "turned silent". It doesn't sound natural to me.

Hi
Bhaisahab, I checked it on COCA and they give 18 fiction entries. I am wondering: could this be a case of an acceptable usage of the phrase in fiction writing?

How about
fall unconscious,
fall asleep,
fall ill

?
