What do you call these dangerous fragments in English?

Schrapnel. It's a German word, I believe, but it's the one we use.

I'm seriously starting to wonder how I was school spelling champion for 8 years in a row! I've always spelt it with a "c" and thought it was German. Not that I didn't believe you, Rover, but various dictionaries backed you up (of course).
 
Until today, I would have said that emsr2d2 was right, and Bob wrong.
