What does this "depositing" mean? It seems to simply mean "put down", but the translation is "bury", which I doubt.

However, are you sure it is "depositing", not "disposing"?
 
It's surely "depositing", I checked it out many times. I think the translator made a mistake thinking it's burying under the ground, not on the ground like being dumped.
 
While we're on the subject of typoes, I imagined the r in the title was just a slip, until I saw it repeated in the OP - 'substrances'.
