As he works hard so he gets first position each time.

For that meaning, you need to remove "so" and it's fine construction-wise. The wording could do with tweaking.

As Alex works hard, he wins first position in the class. (Your wording.)
As Alex works, hard, he's always top of the class. (My re-wording.)
