which one is a synonym for "look forward to, to see before"?

Hi, regarding the following two sentences from a reading which one is a synonym for "look forward to, to see before"? "anticipate" or "awaite"? students have to choose one of them. there is no other option.
"unfortunately the mirror of the telescope did not provide the clear images that were anticipated"
"April 24, 1990, was the beginning of a long awaited placement of a powerful telescope in space"
I think only "anticipate" means predict and to see before and look forward to. right?

Neither is a good synonym.
