Grow + adjective or grow + adverb?

I saw this written by an expert English teacher (I'm modifying the sentence):

"The number of people in ---- seems to have grown slower than those in -----"

The verb grow is used with "slower". Is this correct or should we use "more slowly"?

It's an odd sentence. If we are talking about population, "The population of X seems to have grown more slowly than that of Y" would be more likely.
