How is 'is' pronounced inside a sentence?

For example:

1.selfpreɪz ɪz/z nəʊrekəmendeɪʃn̩ (I think /ɪz/ because it is preceded by a consonant.)
2.hi ɪz/z ʌneɪbl (I think /z/ because it is preceded by a vowel.)

/z/ is more likely in informal conversation, /ɪz/ in more formal speech.

:up: And this collocation seems to me much more likely to be used in formal situations. I don't think I've ever said 'He is unable'. 'He can't' is more likely. ;-)

PS One might say 'He is unable' to emphasize a physical impediment, but again I thnk 'He just can't' is more likely.
