What is the following in red saying?

I seemed that they all wanted at least one luxury tea set and a range of cakes to go with it. When someone reached the 100 pound mark the others all added enough extras to take them over 50 pounds.

Thank you.

Can you provide more context?

Certainly " I seemed that" is wrong. Say "It seemed to me that..."

It's odd. It could mean that when someone had chosen enough to cost 100 pounds, the others ordered £50 more, but then it should be 150 not 50.

I'm sorry. I misquoted it. "It seemed" is correct. Here's more context.

The social dynamic was fascinating. Everybody clearly felt they had to buy something. Jo told me she had invited only people who would be comfortable with spending a certain amount of money, but I wondered whether some might just make a token purchase. It seemed, though, that they all wanted at least one luxury tea set and a range of cakes to go with it. When someone reached the 100 pound mark the others all added enough extras to take them over 50 pounds.

OK- when one person spends over 100, it encourages others to spend more- over 50 each.

I agree. It sounds like a charity event.
