Hello everybody!

What's the English for "to put the potatoes on" or "to put the kettle with potatoes on"?

Do you put the potatoes on just as you put the kettle on?

The meaning of the phrase is that you place potatoes in a kettle filled with water and start boiling them.

Thank you.

'To put the potatoes on' means to put the potatoes into a pan (not a kettle), cover them with water, bring them to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes.

Are there any other ways of describing this activity?

Would it be correct, for instance, to say "I have just put some potatoes and water in the kettle and started boiling them" or "I have just put some potatoes and water in the kettle and I am starting to boil them".

Thank you.

Did you not read post #3? We don't boil potatoes in a kettle.

If I say "I've put the potatoes on", it means that I'm already cooking the potatoes, whether it be by roasting, boiling or whatever.

To more fully describe the boiling situation I might say, "I'm boiling the potatoes in a pot of water".
