Can we use this sentence both with a definite and zero article? If yes, is there any difference?

Steve Black is (the) chief of this expedition.
 
I would use the article.
 
The article is fine, but I could live without it.
 
(the) head would work better than (the) chief for me.
 
All of the above look fine to me.
