Hi,

Below is one of the definition of piggyback and related example sentence from Longman dictionary. I can understand the definition part very well, but I am not sure the meaning of the example sentence when applying that definition.

piggyback:

Dictionary Definition: to use something that is bigger, better, or more successful in order to help another product or project succeed.

Dictionary Example: videos that piggyback onto the success of proven TV programs.

Here is my understanding of the example sentence:
1). videos coming from the success of proven TV programs.

Please help to confirm if my understanding is correct or not.

Thanks.

IMO, it's not that the videos themselves come from the TV programs. It's just that they are aired (shown) in those successful programs and, as a result, the videos themselves become famous (or viral, if you prefer).

A YouTube video, for example, imitating a TV programme is piggybacking- it is trying to get views because it is indirectly associated with the successful program.
