    "by foot" or "on foot"?

    1. He was going there by foot.
    2. He was going there on foot.

Should we use by or on in this case?

Re: "by foot" or "on foot"?

It is "on foot" that is commonly used. Example:

He went to Charlotte on foot.

Re: "by foot" or "on foot"?

We go places by a vehicle: by bike, by car, by bus, by dogsled, etc., but on foot, on horseback. Oddly enough, I'd be inclined to say by camel, should the situation arise.

On foot is the standard form, but you may see by foot used in some contexts. It is, for example, OK to describe a walking tour as Name-of-place by foot.
