Hi everyone,

Can you please single out basic elements of the sociolinguistic situation in Britain?

Thank you

Nah. Way too easy. Ask me a hard one.;-)

Is this an essay title?

Hello, Sinnerman!
I think your question relates to a paper you may have to write and that you seek some ideas or help in it.
First of all, you should define your topic in more detall and make it more specific.
Then, you should think about questions like the following:
- Queen's (or upper class) English vs. "low class" English - linguistic traits and social conventions of use.
- You might also consider regional variants of English - like Cockney or Mancunian varieties.
- Third, you may consider the language situaiton of immigrants and compare the same to that of natives.
English is an international medium of communication, and there are linguistic varieties of "national Englishes" such as American, Australian, Singaporean, or New Zealand English. I once had a graduate student from Singapore who submitted a Master thesis on Singaporean English , comparing it to Standard English. I suggest that, in case you are wiriting a paper, that you do a case study on any of the linguistic varieties of English -whether regional or social -, study the particular linguistic traits and the social/regional mechnisms involved. It could be a work based on empirical research. However, be sure to use an appropriate theoretical framework - either descriptive or relating directly to sociolinguistic theory that you think useful for your topic.
Hope that helps.
