I am a parent of a recently turned 7-year-old native english speaker who has tested as a CEFR B2 (upper intermediate level) reader. Book recommendations all seem too mature in theme, language, tone or emotion for such a young reader. What books may be appropriate for the maturity limitations while still challenging the advanced reading abilities?

Take a look at Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. The author took Chinese folk tales and fashioned them into a continuous narrative about a young girl and her adventures. A Newbery Honor book, it's beautifully presented with lovely illustrations and a change of typeface for the folk tales. Just under 300 pages with a reader's guide at the back with questions to help the reader process what he/she has read. Also an interesting explanation of the author's process. A great book to read together or wait until your child finishes and then enjoy it yourself!

Most kids prefer to choose what they want to read for themselves. Go on a trip to your local bookshop and let him/her have a look at what there is in the children's section. Your child will be naturally attracted to the books that are written for his/her age group.

Don't worry about CEFR bands. The language in books written for 7-year-old native speakers will be quite appropriate for your child.

... native English speaker ...

Remember to capitalise correctly on the forum. Learners here will assume everything you write is correct when they see (from your profile) that you are a native speaker yourself.
