"In" or "at", which is correct in English?

(1) Were you in the Press Conference at that time?
(2) Were you at the Press Conference at that time?

"In" is definitely wrong. A conference is an event, so "at" is correct.

"Press conference" is not a proper noun. Can you use this information to fix two errors in your sentence? Put the corrected version in a new post.

"Is the president available right now?"

"No, he's in a press conference."

The above seems fine to me.

I agree that it would work if he's the one giving the press conference. The reporters and other members of the press are at the press conference, and the president is in one (in the same way that business people can be said to be "in a meeting").
