I want to suggest a person is in a lot of pain and the medicine is not working.

Are these good?

1. Her headache burned through the Aspirin.

2. Her pain raged through the painkillers she had been injected with.

3. The pain in her back seared through the sedatives she had swallowed.

Sedatives aren't supposed to be for pain, so it's no wonder that they didn't ease they pain.

But sometimes, when you have pain, you take a sedative otherwise you can't sleep.

Note my change above. If you want to keep it as all one sentence, you need to use "or" instead of "otherwise".
