Hi everyone! I often get confused about the differences between “although”, “even though”, and “despite” when writing or speaking. I know the basics:
  • “Although” and “even though” introduce a clause and show contrast
  • “Despite” is followed by a noun, pronoun, or -ing form
But I struggle with subtleties:
  • Can “even though” be used in formal writing, or is it mostly informal?
  • Are there differences in emphasis between “although” and “even though”?
  • Can “despite” sometimes replace the other two, or is it always different?
For example, which of these are correct and why?
  1. “Although / Even though / Despite he was tired, he finished the project.”
  2. “Despite / Although / Even though being tired, he continued working.”
I’d really appreciate clear explanations and examples, especially about nuance and style.

Are there differences in emphasis between “although” and “even though”?,

Yes, exactly. This difference in emphasis is the main difference in meaning that I suggest you focus on at this point. 'Even though' is crucially more emphatic.

Can “despite” sometimes replace the other two, or is it always different?

A preposition can never replace a conjunction in a sentence, and if you change the grammar you'll get a different sentence, with a different effect, so yes it's always different in some way, though it's always similar in basic logical form.

For example, which of these are correct and why?

1. "Although / Even though / Despite he was tired, he finished the project.”

Well, 'Despite' is ungrammatical. As you yourself have made reference to in post #1, it must be follwed by a noun phrase. The other two options can both fit well, since the example sentence is insufficient to disambiguate the difference in emphasis. Where did you come up with this sentence, by the way? It's a poor example.

2. “Despite / Although / Even though being tired, he continued working.”

Only 'Despite' works there—again, because of the basic grammatical rule that you refer to in post #1. Are you sure you know the difference between a clause and a noun phrase?

If you want to understand further the difference in use between 'although' and 'even though', you'll need to study contexts that show the difference clearly, where only one of the two fits very well.
