[Vocabulary] amid/amidst & among/amongst

Once again, I would like to know the "actual" difference between them, and whether any would be grammatically incorrect in some contexts.
 
Stylistically, some regard the -st forms as a bit pretentious because people use them to sound more formal and learned.
