What does "at the double" mean in this context? Is it a shortened form of "double?"

Erling Haaland at the double as Manchester City crush meek Manchester United.

Could I also say "on the double" in that sentence? The word "meek" means quite, but in this case does it means lacklusture?

No. Remind me—are you learning to be a sports writer? Or are you just interested in reading football journalism?

It means they lacked heart. They were "completely devoid of motivation and belief." Did you actually watch the match?

Or are you just interested in reading football journalism?
Yes. The vocabulary of English is extensive so, therefore by reading a lot of sports news it will help improve my vocabulary. I really like it how commentators come up with words, phrases and expressions on the spur of the moment to make their descriptions interesting, exciting and colourful. They constantly find different ways of saying "scoring a goal", "kick", "pass" and so on.
Did you actually watch the match?
Yes, I did. As a fan of Manchester United, I was totally gutted with the result.
