Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

..when he showed his nose in a shop, they talked about the beadle – which brought Oliver’s heart into his mouth… (Ch. Dickens, “Oliver Twist”)

..I had heard in the silent, frosty air a sound that brought my heart into my mouth – the tap-tapping of the blind man’s stickupon the frozen road. (R. I. Stevenson, Treasure Island”)

bring somebody’s heart into his mouth = frighten somebody to death
