By/in/on the helicopter

Hi,

I went there by helicopter.
I went there in the helicopter.
I went there on the helicopter.

I think 'by' is correct but I'm not sure if 'in' or 'on' is used.

#1 is correct (if you had helpfully numbered them)).

#2 is correct only if the reader knows which particular helicopter you mean.

#3 is wrong.

Note that in #1 and #2, the word helicopter has two different meanings. In #1 it refers to a means of transport whereas in #2 it refers to a specific vehicle.
