I was hosting an English club for kids. One thing I asked them to do is to describe some pictures. I will show one picture to one kid and ask them to describe. Usually I'll ask them to finish up the story by thinking about what might happen next. I said:

Describe what you see in this picture and use your imagination to continue the story to the end.

Is my sentence natural?

I'd say:
Describe what you see in this picture. Then, use your imagination to continue to tell us how this picture would end up, as in a story.

You told them to continue "the story" when there was no story to start with.

With kids, I think it's better to break the task into a few steps so that it is easier for them to follow. It's less daunting than getting them to create a whole story right from the start.
