These two words have similar meanings but can I use them in the sentence like this?

John tried to elucidate/explain his problems to Sarah.

I felt that using the word elucidate in this sentence will make the sentence sound awkward and wrong. Nevertheless, is it correct?

Thanks for helping once again. :)

"Elucidate" is a a much fancier word. You would not use it for mundane things. You would explain the problems you have with the paper boy. You elucidate on your theory of life.
