Hi everyone, the Chinese film 《南京照相馆》 (Nanjing Photo Studio) has the English title "Dead to Rights". It's a (mod: synopsis follows in white text) historical drama about civilians in Nanjing during the 1937 Massacre who hide in a photo studio and secretly preserve photos as evidence of Japanese war crimes.
I know "dead to rights" is an idiom meaning "caught red-handed" or "with irrefutable proof" (like ironclad evidence), which fits the plot perfectly.
But for native English speakers who see just the title "Dead to Rights" without knowing anything else — what kind of movie would you immediately think it is? Like, what genre or story does it sound like to you? (Crime thriller? Cop drama? Something else?)
Curious about first impressions before people read the synopsis. Thanks!

If you wanted our 100% genuine response to what we might think it was without reading the synopsis, you shouldn't have given us the synopsis!
Since film titles often don't give any clue to the content of the film, I probably wouldn't assume anything other than that someone who had done something illegal would get caught.

Thank you, my fault!

I have edited your post to make the synopsis white. This will let future readers form their opinions without being biased by the synopsis. Anyone wanting to read the synopsis can highlight the text with their cursor to read it.

Although I saw the synopsis before hand, I suppose it could be some kind of horror movie (probably based on revenge), murder drama or even just an action drama.

Sounds to me like a cop thriller, or some kind of action adventure "get the bad guys."

Sounds like it has Steven Seagal in it and/ or went straight to video.

That is exactly what I was thinking! First I thought of Jean-Claude Van Damme but then settled on Steven Seagal.

To me it sounds like one of those straight-to-video action movies, maybe with some cop or revenge angle.
