The organic matter in the earth's soil comes from the remains of the many plants and animals for which the soil serves as habitat, all of which work oxygen and nutrients into the soil, and all of which undergo biological decomposition by soil inhabiting microorganisms, the true caretakers of the soil.

In this sentence, could I

1. omit the?
2. use whom instead of which?
3. use habitats or a habitat?
4. use bring instead of work?
