LITCHFIELD, Conn. — A Connecticut homeowner was bitten by a black bear after his dog chased it into the yard and attacked the pet, officials said. Both were recovering Monday, though the bear escaped into the woods.

I think that "attacked the pet" doesn't fit the context and that it should be changed to "was attacked by the bear".
What do you say?

Another solution is just to insert "it" right before "attacked": "[He] was bitten by a black bear after his dog chased it into the yard and it attacked the pet . . . ."

It seems like it was probably the bear that chased the dog into the yard.
