More and more university and high-school teachers are working as tutors nowadays in my city. We used to charge students based on our teaching experience and skills, but things have changed. Parents are now more likely to hire university or school teachers because of their social status, rather than their actual command of English. They assume that university and school teachers must be experienced, well-educated, and fluent in English.

How much you can charge is closely connected to your social status.

Is my italic sentence natural?

It's okay, yes.

I'd use " (formal) qualifications" instead of "social status" there.
