I can just imagine him saying that!

This is just a sample sentence from an Oxford dictionary. Let me create a context for it.

A: Tom says he hates school.
B: I can just imagine him saying that!

I wonder if there are some other ways to express the same/similar meaning as the sample sentence. What about this one?

I can just imagine he would say that!
 
I don't think your example context shows very well the meaning that the speaker/writer of the sentence had in mind, which is probably something like this:

That's just typical of him!
