Can I change "I got lost" to "did I get lost" in the following sentence? Which is more natural, or what is the differnce between, if both are correct and natural? Thank you for your help!

--At the first sight of her face in her avatar I got lost in the contemplation of her eyes.--

No. "Did I get lost?" is a question. You can't insert a question into that sentence. Are you trying to use an inversion construction? If so, you would have to say:

Only when I saw her face in her avatar did I get lost in contemplation.

(The sentence itself doesn't make much sense but it shows you the construction.)

Thank you emsr! Yes, I was meaning to use inversion there. Is it that the sentence will normally use an inversion construction if one of its locative (but not other) adverbials comes at the beginning? For example:

At the top was a vase.
