I wrote this dialog:
Woman: You scared me the other night.
Man: I'm sorry.
Woman: You should have called and told me you were coming by. (the man was there to pick up something, so he locked himself in, picked up the thing, and left)
Man: I thought you slept/were sleeping/were asleep, and didn't want to wake you.
Which one of 'slept', 'were sleeping', and 'were asleep' would be more natural here?
