Hello, why "a day" is not correct when I don't want to mean 'daytime'? Here is another set of examples:

A- In kolkata, the average temperature for a day in January is 18 degree Celcius.

B- In kolkata, the average temperature of a day in January is 18 degree Celcius.

C- In kolkata, the average temperature during a day in January is 18 degree Celcius.

D- In kolkata, the average temperature on a day in January is 18 degree Celcius.

Hello, why IS "a day" not correct when I don't want to mean 'daytime'?

Note the inversion in questions. Not "Why a day is?" It's "Why isn't a day ...?" Or "Why is a day not ...?"

It's not the natural choice.

Kolkata.
Celsius.
Degrees.

In Kolkata, the average temperature in January is 18 degrees Celsius.

It's implied that it means "during a day".

Is it really as low as 18 degrees? I suspect you mean "in the night". A day means a calendar day.

'Shimla' is a proper noun and needs a capital S. (Check your title.) These things are much more important than the things you ask about.

It's a matter of perspective. You're probably speaking by European standards.

By Indian standards it is.

And I'm not really sure the OP's right when he says the average January temperature in Kolkata is 18 degrees. I'd say it's closer to about 21 or 22. The average nighttime temperature might be 18.

January high temperatures in Shimila average 20°C. January low temperatures in Kolkata average 14°C

Adjust the actual numbers to reflect what's true for the given region. I just made those up.

We typically don't bother mentioning 'daytime' and 'nighttime' for average highs and lows because we know that it's usually coldest at night and warmest during the day.
You might hear a forecast speak of "a nighttime low down to 10 degrees" or a "daytime high of 90" for a particular day, though.
