instructions to a child when playing with the modeling clay

Hello! Do my following instructions sound natural?
"Take out the modeling clay from the pot, smooth it with your fingers, now place the clay in the mould, push the cover with your hand, open it and take away the leftovers."

Take the modeling clay from the pot and smoothen it with your fingers. Now put the clay in the mould and close it and press on the cover. Then open it and take the moulded clay out.

And if I don’t need to take the moulded clay out but I need to remouve some clay that didn’t fit the mould end is left outside the mould? In this case, “take away the leftovers” isn’t correct?

Should I use "wipe away" even if I don't use any cloth but do it with my fingers. I use modeling clay, not regular clay.
