Hi:
What is the exact meaning of the words in bold in the following passage? It is from the book The Asian Trade Revolution of the Seventeenth Century, by Niels Steensgaard, p. 362.

"Robert Sherley continued to pester Conway with letters, but his demands were now more modest: he merely desired free transport to Persia and then - of course - the money still left on his warrant."

Many thanks.

Is there any mention of any "warrant" earlier?

See definitions 4, 7, & 8 as well as possibly definitions 3a-3c.

We'll need more context to be specific, but essentially it's a piece of paper stating how much money a person is owed or has. I suspect a person could probably borrow against the initial amount, hence the reference to the amount still left. Sort of a precursor to a modern day checking account or credit card.

I'd guess that he has either spent part of the initial balance or borrowed against it.

The whole page is attached.
