muted VS mute

Do my examples clearly distinguish these 2 words:

1. They were mute. (not speaking)
2. They spoke in muted voices. (not loud)

Thank you.

Learning vocabs through pairs of similar words really helps.

Yes, your examples sound right to me.
 
:up: 'Mute' can also be a noun, meaning various sound-reducing/sound-reduced things - ranging from a conical device that quietens a brass instrument to a person who has (physically) no voice. ;-)
