Is my statement correct?

My dissertation was part of a funded research project titled "..." I wrote the project's original proposal and served as an unofficial leader of the research group.

You need a full stop after the title of the project (after the closing quotation mark). Otherwise, it's grammatically correct. Note that if there was more than one leader (unofficial or not), then "an unofficial leader" is correct. If not, and it was just you, use "the unofficial leader".

Note that I have changed your thread title so that it is unique and contains some/all of the words you are asking us about. I have moved your actual question to the main body of the post, which is the only place in which it should appear.

You can also use "was" instead of "served" in that sentence.
