Our hotel was at five minutes from the beach.

Our hotel was only five minutes away from the beach.

Are both the above sentences ok?

You don't need "away" in the second sentence. In my opinion, it is better without it.

The first would be correct without "at".

Thanks. Can you please let me know why "at" is not correct.

I think a building can be at a place but cannot be at a certain distance/period of time from a place.

Anil, without "at" the sentence is "Our hotel was five minutes from the beach." This is correct. What could "at" possibly add to that sentence?

MNY, I see a typo you might want to correct. ;-)

Thanks. I copied the sentence and then forgot to delete "at".

Have you "borrowed" the time marker "at" from the expressions of time indication as in "at five o'clock", "at nine", etc? If so, then it doesn't work with distances expressed in minutes, hours, etc.
