Dear Teachers

I am always confused the usage of "recover" and "over". In the sentence below, should I use "am" recovered, a participle, or "have recovered", a verb? And, it seems that "over recovered" sounds more natural, but overly is an adverb, which should be ahead of the adjective "recovered".

I had speech impediment when I was a kid, but now, I am/have recovered, overly/over recovered.

Please help.

Regards

Anthony the learner

You don't recover from a speech impediment - You overcome it.

'It took me ages to recover from a serious bout of shingles.'

* * *

Over/overly are different. They mean excessive/excessively.

'My wife is over-generous/overly-generous with her money; she gives too much away.'

So you can see it doesn't make sense to say 'over-recover from an illness'. It would mean 'I am excessively healthy.'

You can also use the word "over", not overly, in the phrase "get over sth" to say that you recovered from an illness. For example, "I had lung cancer but I got over it quite fast".
