[Grammar] past participle or bare infinitive?

s1. He saw a large crowd assembled at the edge of town.

s2. He saw a large crowd assemble[assembling] at the edge of town.

Which one is grammatically right? Or Are both right?

The original text is s1. but I think s2 can be right.
 
He saw a large crowd assembled at the edge of town. - They had already assembled
He saw a large crowd assemble at the edge of town. - He watched them assemble, from start to finish.
He saw a large crowd assembling at the edge of town. He watched them for part of the time in which they were assembling.
