The past perfect tense expresses an action complete before another past action. For example:

1) He left after I had gone away.

Is it grammatically correct to rewrite the sentence above using past indefinite tense even for past perfect tense?

For example,

1) He left after I went away.

Yes. Context determines which tense you should use.
