Which tense is appropriate between presence tense and past tense in writing a recommendation letter for a former student?

Hi, and welcome to the forum. :hi:

A typical letter of recommendation would include a variety of tenses. Why don't you write a letter, post it in the Editing & Writing Topics forum, and ask for suggestions? Don't use any real names.

There are quite a few letters in the letters section already. It might be helpful to read those letters and the responses.

There is no rule in English saying that you cannot use different tenses in a letter, or even in a sentence.
