[Grammar] Regarding the use of preposition.

Sentence: "I pity (for) the shareholders of BP who bought the stock at higher valuations"

My question: Is there any need, grammatically wise, to use for preposition after the word pity ?

Reading the sentence I wouldn't use 'for', so I don't see why there should be any need for it due to grammar.

I can see 'for' should be used if you were saying 'I feel pity for the shareholds....'

"For" is not needed. It's not even grammatical to just add "for."

"The shareholders" is the direct object of the verb "pity." I pity whom? I pity the shareholders.

Absolutely no need, as the others have said.

"To pity" does not take a preposition.

When "pity" is used as a noun after a verb, it does:

"To show pity for..."; "To feel pity for..."; "To take pity on..."
