Is "sit at a/the table unnatural in English?

"Friends get together during holidays and birthday parties and sit at a table."

Under "holiday" I mean Christmas, New Year's Day, etc.

"sit at the table" is all right, you can also say "sit around the table", "sit round the table", but I am not a native.

[STRIKE]Under[/STRIKE] By "holidays", I mean Christmas, New Year's Day, etc.

Please note my corrections above.

What made you think it was unnatural? I don't find the phrase particularly natural in this context. I assume you're talking about families and friends getting together to eat a celebratory meal. They don't just sit at a table and look at each other!

"Sit at the table" is all right. You can also say "sit around the table" or "sit round the table", but bear in mind that I am not a native English speaker.

mrwroc, note my corrections above.

Round/around works better for me with a group of friends.
