Can one use:
1) Some of those books I knew he had stolen.

instead of:
2) There were some of those books that I knew he had stolen.

Gratefully,
Navi.

Why not say 'I knew he had stolen some of those books'?

I have a feeling that that wouldn't be complicated enough for navi tasan, Rover. ;-)

Thank you both very much.

Well, let us say that I am exploring the twilight zone of the English language. It is a dimension beyond sight and sound, where grammar becomes a bit weird...

Gratefully,
Navi.

I can imagine it being part of a dialogue like:

Tom: Have you seen how many books Steve has?
Bob: Yes. He's got hundreds.
Tom: I don't know how he affords them on his salary.
Bob: Well, between you and me, some of those books ... I know he stole!
