Hi everyone!

Oxford dictionaries offer the only correct stress in the word CONSEQUENCE which falls on the first syllable. However, I'm almost sure... no, I can bet my hat that I've heard this word with stress falling on the second syllable. Can it be some particular Canadian or Australian pronunciation or something?

Thanks in advance!

I have spent time in both countries, and I have never heard the word expressed otherwise than with the stress being placed on the first syllable.

I have visited both America and Canada, and I have watched/listened to more than my fair share of both accents both in real life and on film and I have never heard con-SE-quence.

If you can recall (or even better, provide a link to) where you heard this pronunciation, then great. Failing that, I'm afraid I think you are mistaken.

CON-se-quence.
con-se-QUEN-tial.

I'm willing to concede that Marina may have heard 'con-SE-quence'. We all know that some people mispronounce words. I wondering though what the CON-sequence of this is.

Unfortunately, I cannot provide any link. I just know that I've heared it from people in Canada. So... now I'm infected with this wrong pronunciation. And the worst thing is that my teacher caught me on that. Can I at least clear my name by saying that it is not a mistake but a different dialect? ;-)

No. As far as I know, the word is not stressed on the second syllable in any major variety/dialect of English.

As i know it is on 2nd syllable...right?

Have you read the thread? The post immediately above yours by a moderator says, "... the word is not stressed on the second syllable in any major variety/dialect of English".

As at least some of the information is untrue, I have assumed the latter.
