[Grammar] The Correct use of 'Convene'

I came across a sentence in a speech script written by my Principal. It makes me very much confused.

The sentence is as follows:

I would like to 'convene' everyone to lend their support to this cause....

I find the word 'convene' oddly used. In my opinion, the better word is 'urge'. If I am not wrong, 'to convene' means to arrange a meeting or to gather for a meeting.

Will the sentence sound better if I replace 'convene' with 'urge'?

Urge, or encourage, would be much better. Your understanding of "convene" is right - to gather for a meeting.
