The following is my own sentence.

The first significance of the advent of Jesus Christ was to save mankind.

Is the sentence OK?

Thanks.

Hello Elaine. :)
Note my suggested amendment below.
The first significance of the advent of Jesus Christ was that he came to save mankind.
Note also that in Christian theology, it is Christ's sacrifice by dying on the cross that is linked to the salvation of mankind.

Tdol was suggesting that you use "The meaning" instead of "The first significance".

Thanks, emsr 2d2.

Can I conclude that 'The first significance' is not correctly used, and 'The meaning" should be used instead?

Meaning beats significance for me. If there is no second meaning, then first doesn't work, but primary would.
