Should we use "the" in directions? Because I sometimes see directions without "the". Examples:

There is the Baltic Sea in <the ?> north of the country.
Igrew up in X. This is a small city in <the ?> north–eastern Poland.

What is the rule? Why is "the" in the first sentence and "" in the second sentence?

In "in the north", "north" is a noun. In "in north-east", "north-east" is an adjective. If the second sentence had used "north-east of Poland" instead of "north-eastern Poland", the article would have been required.

Ok so before directions as nouns we put "the" and before adjectives we put nothing, thank you :)

Barman, this is not your thread and you have not stated that you are not a teacher as previously asked.

I've deleted your posts. If you want to ask supplementary questions you'll need to start a new thread of your own.
