The second reason is the swelling of their wallets, which enables people to afford tourist expenses.

This sentence is meant to express the growth of people's income. Is there a more natural expression to replace it?

Thanks for your help!

Jason

You've answered your own question: the growth of people's income.

Your title was "the swelling of the pockets" and your thread was about "the swelling of their wallets". Did you have a question about the "pockets" phrase too?

Sorry, I just made a hasty mistake. It was supposed to be "the swelling of the wallets". Is it a natural expression?

Thanks! Then I just write "the growth of people's income". That should be ok, isn't it?

That's OK- you could use incomes.

How about:

growth of people's income - growing affluence

afford tourist expenses - afford to spend on tourism

Or just "rising incomes" -- we know it must be people's incomes, as most animals and plants can't be thought of has having an income, and context makes it less likely national incomes or other aggregates aren't the subject of the sentence.
