When talking about a certain boundary can I use either the singular or the plural form of "boundary"?

1. There are certain boundaries/limits between us.
2. There is a certain boundary /limit between us.

I used to according to #1.
 
When talking about a certain boundary can I use either the singular or the plural form of "boundary"?
If it's just one boundary you have in mind, then use the singular ("boundary", not "limit").
